Znake

Znake

Znake is a simple Snake / Worm / Nibbles / ... like video game for the ZX Spectrum 8 bit home computer, produced by Sinclair during the '80s. The goal of the game is to drive the snake (in the directions up / down / left / right) so that it can eat the apples that appear on the screen, avoiding collisions with the walls or the snake itself. For every apple eaten, the player earns points, but the body of the snake gets longer, making the game more difficult.

Information and history

Znake originates from the desire to make a game, albeit simple, for the famous ZX Spectrum, a computer I am particularly fond of. I had known the great Z88DK for some time (I take this opportunity to greet the Z88DK team and thank them for their excellent work), but I had never gone beyond some simple test until one day, in 2005, inspired by a tutorial (unfortunately I lost the reference, it was too many years ago) on the X window system, I decided to implement the snake as a linked list. So, playing with malloc and putchar I implemented Znake almost entirely in C, using a minimum of Assembly. Finally, I transferred Znake to tape, in order to play it on a real Spectrum (see screenshots).

Neither the subject nor the name of Znake were original choices; on the web there are similar projects with the same name; to see them just make a simple search.

For those interested, you can download and use Znake on the several Spectrum emulators available, or even transfer it to tape for use on a real Spectrum; otherwise you can play directly within this site, through web emulators.
